While some folks are looking for classes, others are looking for competitive teams. The NAIGC is a great resource for finding a competitive club in your area.
Have you heard about our Adult Gymnastics Camp? It's a total blast!
If you are unable to find an adult gymnastics class, or an adult class isn't for you, know that some gymnastics clubs allow adults to attend their open gyms. It's best to ask in advance if an adult can join. Open gym can be a great way to get more access to the equipment.
If you bring more than one adult with you to open gym every week, it might even be helpful in convincing the gym to start an adult class. At open gym, be prepared to have to work around kids who may be doing more playing than gymnastics. Some lucky adult gymnasts are able to find an adult only open gym, and those are really great!
If you can't get to a class, check out our new Handstands at Home Program. It's a six week structured program that you're sure to love!
One issue with adult classes is that a lot of gyms become frustrated if a bunch of adults come one week and not the next (some of the classes are set up as a drop-in). If you find a class in your area but aren't in love with every last aspect of it, still see if you can pop in from time to time! Supporting gyms who offer adult class is the best way to ensure that we continue to have these valuable opportunities to train.
Every adult class is different. Quite often I have found quite that the class ends up catering to the present athletes' needs to a large extent. So if most of the athletes who have been going to the class prefer to work mostly independently, the class tends to reflect that.
If you would like the class to be a certain way or to cater to your needs, ask! The worst that will happen is they will not be able to accomodate you. I find that many instructors don't think adults want to be told what to do (i.e. to be coached!) in gymnastics. This can oftentimes be true when a lot of the students are ex-high level gymnasts. However, if you want to be coached, let them know!! Others may want coaching too but just be too shy to speak up.
Always show appreciation that the class exists while asking for tweaks to be made in how it's run, and you can't lose :)
Go here to read an interview with an adult gymnastics instructor who is also an athlete.
Here is another great interview with an adult gymnastics instructor with over 20 years of experience!
Here is the adult class where I got my start (it's held at the same gym as the NH Adult Camp!) There is also one down the road in Rochester NH which is run by Dominique Chasse, who you may know from The Original Adult Gymnastics Camp.
And lastly, afraid you can't handle an adult gymnastics class? Get inspired by reading this story from a diabetic adult gymnast.
